CAIRO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy has appointed Zaid al-Sabban as his personal envoy for Sudanese affairs to bolster efforts to end the conflict in the country, the Cairo-based organization said Tuesday.

The envoy will intensify contacts with relevant Sudanese parties, help bridge differences and create conditions for an inclusive, Sudanese-led national dialogue, the organization said in a statement.

Al-Sabban has served as director of the Arab League's Sudan and Horn of Africa department since 2017 and has participated in the organization's efforts to promote dialogue among Sudanese parties, the statement said.

The appointment followed Fahmy's visit to Sudan in late October, during which he met with Sudanese leaders and political groups to discuss efforts to end the conflict and promote national dialogue.

Separately on Tuesday, Fahmy met with Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salim and condemned repeated drone attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on civilian facilities and vital infrastructure in Sudan.

Sudan has been gripped by an armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF since mid-April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced internally and across borders. ■
