KINSHASA, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has recorded more than 9,000 confirmed cases of Ebola since the outbreak was declared on May 15, with the death toll rising to 4,381, according to the latest situation report released Tuesday.
The report by the country's health authorities put the cumulative number of confirmed cases at 9,066, with an overall case fatality rate of 48.3 percent.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, has affected 65 health zones across seven provinces, with the eastern province of Ituri remaining the epicenter, accounting for over 70 percent of all confirmed cases.
No vaccine or treatment has yet been specifically approved for the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, although clinical trials are underway.
The outbreak has become the largest and deadliest ever recorded in the DRC and the second-largest Ebola outbreak globally, after the 2014-2016 epidemic in West Africa. ■
