BISSAU, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Guinea-Bissau's transitional Prime Minister Ilidio Vieira Te and the National Electoral Commission (NEC) said Thursday that conditions were not in place to hold the country's general elections scheduled for Dec. 6.
The prime minister made the remarks following a meeting with transitional President Horta Inta-A, during which they discussed the political and institutional conditions for holding the elections.
Te said the Dec. 6 election date was not feasible due to organizational challenges facing political parties, noting that some parties still needed to hold their congresses before participating in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, NEC Deputy Executive Secretary Felisberta Moura Vaz said following a separate meeting with Inta-A that holding the presidential and legislative elections on Dec. 6 was not feasible from a procedural standpoint, as much of the electoral timetable was in jeopardy.
She said the commission had informed the transitional president of the difficulties in holding the elections as scheduled.
Vaz said the commission had presented an overview of the electoral timetable to the transitional president, adding that she had received no response regarding a possible new election date. ■
