DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's economy has maintained strong growth momentum in 2026, with mainland Tanzania expanding by 6 percent in the first quarter and projected to grow by more than 6 percent in the second and third quarters, according to Bank of Tanzania Governor Emmanuel Tutuba.
Tutuba said Thursday that financial services, industrial production, infrastructure investment and social services supported the growth.
Zanzibar's economy grew by 6.7 percent in the first quarter and is estimated to have expanded by more than 7 percent in the second and third quarters, driven by tourism, construction and irrigation projects, he said.
Tutuba said the latest gross domestic product (GDP) rebasing exercises had raised mainland Tanzania's nominal GDP in 2025 to 234.104 trillion Tanzanian shillings (about 92.3 billion U.S. dollars), from 230.073 trillion shillings under the previous series.
Zanzibar's nominal GDP rose to 9.242 trillion shillings from 7.029 trillion shillings, Tutuba said.
He said mainland inflation rose to 4.3 percent in August from an average of 4.1 percent in the quarter ending June, but remained within the medium-term target of 3 to 5 percent.
Private-sector credit grew by an average of 32.5 percent in the quarter ending September, while foreign exchange reserves remained above 6 billion dollars, providing 4.3 months of import cover, he said.
Tutuba said the economic outlook remained favorable despite risks from elevated global commodity prices, supply disruptions and El Nino-related effects. ■
