WINDHOEK, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese automaker BYD has officially launched its new energy vehicle brand in Namibia, expanding its presence in the African market.
Namibian automotive distributor Pupkewitz Motors announced on Tuesday that it will represent BYD in the country, with the brand to be offered through retail outlets in Windhoek, Walvis Bay and Ongwediva.
"Our ambition is not simply to introduce new vehicles to the market, but to create an experience around new energy mobility that is relevant to Namibian customers. We look forward to building awareness, educating consumers and allowing customers to experience BYD for themselves," said Nico Pieters, a franchise executive at Pupkewitz Motors, in a statement.
Models being introduced to the Namibian market include the BYD Dolphin, BYD Dolphin Surf, BYD Sealion 5, BYD Sealion 6, BYD Shark 6, BYD Sealion 7 and BYD Seal Performance.
"The range allows Namibian customers to explore different forms of electrified mobility while experiencing the technology, comfort and features associated with the BYD brand," Pieters said.
He said the launch comes as energy efficiency, sustainability and the future of transportation gain increasing attention globally.
"BYD's global focus on new energy technologies places the brand at the forefront of this changing automotive landscape, while its entry into Namibia provides local motorists with greater access to alternative vehicle technologies," he added.
With the official launch of BYD, Pupkewitz Motors is expanding its portfolio to include a global new energy vehicle brand, reinforcing its commitment to providing Namibian customers with greater choice as mobility evolves.
In September, economic and market indicators from Namibian firm IJG Securities, showed that Chinese brands are steadily gaining popularity in Namibia. Haval, Jetour and Chery accounted for 5.9 percent, 5.8 percent and 2.3 percent, respectively, of the Namibian passenger vehicle market. ■
