KHARTOUM, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said Sunday that an aerial attack hit two contracted trucks carrying WFP food commodities in South Kordofan State in southern Sudan, killing one driver.

In a statement, the WFP said the attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday.

"The contracted trucks were en route from Dilling to Kadugli and clearly marked as humanitarian vehicles," the WFP said, adding that it was still collecting additional details about the circumstances of the incident, including the extent of damage to the food cargo.

The UN agency called for a prompt and impartial investigation into the incident and for those responsible for any violations to be held accountable. It also expressed its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the driver who was killed.

The attack came just one day after a WFP truck struck an explosive device in Dilling, South Kordofan, after delivering lifesaving food assistance, the statement said.

The WFP urged all parties to the hostilities to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and ensure the safe and unimpeded movement of humanitarian personnel and cargo.

Sudan has been witnessing a deadly war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023.

The conflict has killed thousands and displaced millions of people inside and outside Sudan, while exacerbating the country's humanitarian and food crises. ■
