DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous Tanzanian archipelago, is making steady progress on infrastructure projects ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi said Saturday.

Speaking to journalists at State House in Zanzibar, Mwinyi said preparations extend beyond the construction of Fumba Stadium to include roads, transport services and other infrastructure needed to serve visitors and residents during the continental tournament.

"Traveling around Zanzibar now, you can see major infrastructure changes, particularly in roads. This is part of our preparations for AFCON, and we are satisfied with the pace of implementation," he said.

Mwinyi said contractors had committed to completing the projects by December 2026, allowing time to test facilities and finalize preparations before the tournament begins in June 2027.

"We will have enough time to ensure everything is ready before the tournament starts," he said.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda from June 19 to July 17. ■
