TRIPOLI, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Libyan teachers staged a protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office in Tripoli on Thursday, calling for the implementation of their financial and professional demands, according to local media reports.
Led by the General Union of Teachers, the protest followed a 15-day sit-in that began Sept. 13 at the start of the academic year, escalating into an open-ended strike from Sept. 27 after the union said no concrete action was taken to meet their demands, the reports said.
The teachers are demanding unified salary scales, payment of outstanding dues and allowances, comprehensive health insurance, and enforcement of laws protecting their rights, according to the reports.
The Ministry of Education has called on education monitors in municipalities to reopen schools and receive students, saying it is making efforts to address teachers' demands.
The latest protest adds further pressure on the government to reach an agreement with teachers' unions and end the standoff, as the strike enters its second week and the suspension of classes continues. ■
