MAPUTO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 17 people were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Mozambique's southern province of Inhambane on Thursday night, Mozambique's national news agency AIM reported Friday.
The accident occurred on National Road N1 in Zavala District when an interprovincial passenger vehicle collided with a truck traveling in the opposite direction, causing severe damage to the passenger vehicle.
All those killed were traveling in the passenger vehicle, and one of the injured was in serious condition, according to AIM.
The exact cause of the collision remains unclear.
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Friday expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery.
He urged motorists to strictly observe traffic rules, including speed limits and road signs, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances that could impair their ability to drive. ■
