CAIRO, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas discussed efforts to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire and advance a political settlement during talks in Cairo, Egypt's presidency said on Wednesday.
Al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's support for a just and comprehensive settlement, adding that "the issue would remain central to the region until an agreement guaranteeing Palestinian rights was reached," according to the statement.
He said Egypt would continue working with mediators to implement the agreement reached at the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit in October 2025 to end the war in Gaza.
Al-Sisi called on all parties to comply with the agreement by halting escalation, facilitating humanitarian aid and creating conditions for early recovery and reconstruction.
He also reiterated Egypt's rejection of any displacement of Palestinians or attempts to undermine their national cause, and expressed support for the Palestinian National Authority and for efforts to achieve consensus among Palestinian factions.
Abbas praised Egypt's efforts to preserve Palestinian rights and advance a just and sustainable settlement, and expressed appreciation for Egypt's longstanding role as a key supporter and mediator.
He briefed al-Sisi on the latest developments, including the deteriorating situation in the West Bank, which Abbas attributed to Israeli occupation policies.
The two presidents agreed to intensify political coordination and consultations at all levels on developments in the Palestinian territories and the wider region, the statement said. ■
