ABUJA, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Nine people were killed after unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on a commercial bus in Nigeria's central Plateau State, police said Tuesday.

Alfred Alabo, spokesperson for the Plateau State police, told Xinhua by telephone that the bus, which was heading to Jos, the state capital, was intercepted by the gunmen at Dungus, a town in Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area, on Sunday night.

Seven people were shot dead at the scene, while two others later died in hospital, Alabo said, describing the incident as "callous."

Police have launched an investigation into the attack and ordered a manhunt for the gunmen. A team of forensic experts, homicide detectives and other personnel has been deployed to the scene.

In a statement, police authorities said an earlier ban on motorcycle operations in some areas of the state remained in force, adding that the restriction was aimed at preventing fatal incidents.
