NAIROBI, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) recorded an operating profit of 3.2 billion shillings (24.7 million U.S. dollars) in the 2025/2026 fiscal year, Kenya Railways Corporation told local media.
Kenya Railways Corporation Managing Director Philip Mainga attributed the historic profit to a surge in cargo volumes, enhanced operational efficiency, faster freight clearance at the Port of Mombasa, and improved customer engagement.
Speaking to local daily Business Daily on Wednesday, Mainga noted that freight volumes on the Chinese-built railway rose to a record 8.2 million tonnes, up from 7.04 million tonnes the previous fiscal year, generating 168.4 million dollars in revenue.
According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, passenger numbers rose to 2.73 million in 2025 from 2.44 million the previous year.
With rising freight and passenger traffic, the SGR continues to drive Kenya's transport sector and support the nation's broader economic transformation. ■
