JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Two people were injured after a light aircraft crashed in Midrand, South Africa's Gauteng Province, on Tuesday afternoon, according to local media reports.
Ruan Heyns, spokesperson for the Community Emergency Response Team South Africa, said the accident happened near the intersection of New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road in Glen Austin, Midrand. The aircraft was carrying two occupants, a man and a woman, who were injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department said a secondary motor vehicle accident occurred at the same location following the crash, further complicating rescue efforts and causing significant traffic congestion.
The cause of the crash was under investigation. Authorities had not yet confirmed whether there were additional injuries or fatalities in either the crash or the subsequent road accident.
The affected section of the road was temporarily closed to allow the wreckage to be removed. ■
