LUSAKA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's governing United Party for National Development (UPND) has secured a majority of the elected constituency seats in the National Assembly following last month's general elections, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) announced Friday.
The ECZ said the UPND won 137 of the 226 constituency seats, while the main opposition National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity secured 59 seats. A total of 28 seats went to independent candidates and other parties.
The Lumezi North and Mandevu constituencies have yet to declare their winners.
Among the 224 elected constituency members announced, 192 are male and 32 female.
Zambia held its general elections on Aug. 13, with incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema winning a second term in office. ■
