CAIRO, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Egypt's economy grew by 5.1 percent in the 2025/2026 fiscal year ending in June, up from 4.4 percent the previous fiscal year and exceeding international institutions' projections, the Egyptian government said Thursday.

Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom said at a cabinet meeting that "the Egyptian economy achieved a growth rate of 4.7 percent in the fourth quarter of the 2025/2026 fiscal year, bringing the growth rate for the fiscal year as a whole to 5.1 percent."

"This reflects the resilience and sustainability of the Egyptian economy's growth amid the regional tensions," Rostom said.

He attributed the growth to improved performance across several sectors, noting that the industry, trade and telecommunications sectors served as the main engines, accounting for 48 percent of total growth.

The fiscal year also saw a clear recovery in Suez Canal activity, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors, Rostom said.

The minister added that non-petroleum manufacturing maintained strong growth of 9 percent, while petroleum refining returned to positive growth of 8.7 percent, compared with a contraction of 1.9 percent in the previous fiscal year, amid higher production and refinery maintenance.

In August, the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) projected Egypt's real GDP growth to pick up to 4.6 percent in the current 2025/26 fiscal year.
