KHARTOUM, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were killed and dozens injured in a drone attack targeting a civilian convoy in the Um Sharu area in Sudan's North Kordofan State, a rights group said Friday.
The attack took place on Thursday and also destroyed four civilian vehicles, rights group Emergency Lawyers said in a statement, adding there was no military presence or armed confrontation in the area at the time of the strike.
The group condemned the attack, saying continued drone strikes on civilians in North Kordofan, amid sieges and limited health services, are worsening residents' suffering and depriving the injured of necessary care.
It called for an immediate halt to attacks affecting civilians, guaranteed access for humanitarian aid, and an independent and effective investigation into the attack.
North Kordofan State has witnessed a military escalation as part of the ongoing war in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in mid-April 2023. ■
