WINDHOEK, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Cricket Namibia on Monday named a 16-player squad for an inaugural men's T20 International tri-series featuring Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe from August 28 to September 6 in Windhoek.
Also known as the FNB Eagles, Namibia will be captained by veteran all-rounder Gerhard Erasmus, who was named the ICC Men's Associate Cricketer of the Year for 2024.
Head coach Craig Williams said the tournament would give Namibia an opportunity to test itself against two strong African sides and called on local supporters to rally behind the Eagles.
The tournament will mark the first time Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe have competed in a multi-team T20I event on Namibian soil. Each team will play the other two twice, with the top two advancing to the final.
Cricket Namibia said the series would serve as an initial step toward the planned launch of an Africa Cup in 2027, aimed at providing regular high-level competition among leading African cricket nations.
Following the tri-series, Namibia will host South Africa for three ODIs on September 9, 11 and 13. The matches will make up the first bilateral ODI series between the countries and Namibia's first home ODI series against South Africa. ■
