TRIPOLI, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- An explosion occurred Friday evening inside a storage facility containing weapons in western Libya, sending missiles and ammunition flying, local media and authorities reported.
The facility is located in Al-Sikt area south of Misrata City, about 200 km east of the Libyan capital Tripoli.
Local media reported that successive explosions continued inside the ammunition depot. Authorities closed a nearby road and took security measures as a precaution against further risks.
The Security Media Department said in a statement issued Friday that the acting interior minister of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity had issued instructions regarding the explosion at a "hangar" containing ammunition and weapons in Al-Sikt area.
The statement added that security teams were dispatched to survey the site and surrounding areas and collect remnants of the explosion.
No official information was immediately available on the cause of the explosion or whether it resulted in any deaths or injuries. ■
