TRIPOLI, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Libya's internationally recognized Government of National Unity issued a decision on Wednesday to regulate foreign education in the country, outlining rules for the establishment and operation of foreign educational institutions, according to the government platform "hokomitna."

The 55-article regulation requires that foreign educational programs be accredited by their countries of origin and mandates that all institutions respect Islamic Sharia, as well as Libyan values, customs, traditions and national identity.

It also sets infrastructure standards, stipulating that educational institutions provide engineering, health, and electricity facilities in line with safety standards and student capacity.

Under the new rules, licensed foreign schools can use public educational buildings for a fee, while private schools operating from their own premises must allocate the buildings exclusively for educational purposes and cannot use them for multiple activities.

The decision also permits foreign embassies to establish schools in Libya under bilateral agreements, provided that they do not offend religion and public morals and respect the general orientations of Libyan society, according to the government platform.
