LUSAKA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's electoral body on Friday lifted the suspension on the counting and announcement of election results.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) had earlier suspended the process following violence targeting polling staff and the theft of marked ballot papers in some districts.
"Following a review of the security situation and consultations with the relevant law enforcement agencies, I'm pleased to inform you and to inform the nation that the security threat to the electoral process has been contained, and that the necessary measures have been put in place to enable the process to continue," ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis told a press briefing.
She noted that the commission would announce the first batch of results at 10:00 p.m. local time Friday. ■
