ABUJA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least nine bodies were recovered from a bush following a suspected bandit attack in Nigeria's central state of Niger, police said Wednesday.

Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman for the Niger State police, told Xinhua by telephone that the bodies were recovered from a bush along the Wawa-Lumma road in Borgu Local Government Area after security operatives were deployed to search the area.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the victims were suspected to have been killed while travelling along the Wawa-Lumma road when bandits struck on Tuesday, according to the spokesperson.

While the motive for the attack remains unknown, Abiodun said that security clearance operations had been intensified to secure the area against further threats.

Niger State has witnessed repeated incidents of violent attacks in recent years, including banditry and kidnapping.
