YAOUNDE, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Three people died in Chad after heavy rains triggered flash floods, officials said Wednesday, as forecasters warned of more storms.
The flooding hit Tuesday in several neighborhoods of Adre, a town in the Assoungha department of Ouaddai Province in eastern Chad.
Local authorities said five people were swept away by rising waters. Citing eyewitnesses, local media reported that three died while two were pulled to safety by residents.
The floods also caused extensive property damage, with water inundating shops and businesses and destroying merchandise. Homes and other infrastructure were also damaged.
Officials cautioned that the toll could rise as assessments continue and more information comes in about the full extent of the damage. ■
