KAMPALA, Aug.11 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday swore in Adonia Ayebare as the country's new minister of foreign affairs after Ayebare renounced his U.S. citizenship.
The swearing-in ceremony for Ayebare and two other ministers of state was held at State House in Entebbe, about 40 km south of the capital Kampala.
Ayebare, who previously served as Uganda's permanent representative to the United Nations, replaces Jeje Odongo. His swearing-in had been delayed over issues related to his dual citizenship.
Museveni said the provision allowing dual citizenship was introduced to address historical challenges, but public officials must demonstrate singular allegiance.
"The dual citizenship arrangement was introduced to address a difficult history. But one must choose where their loyalty lies. If we are to have unity, then let's unite, but you cannot owe allegiance to two sides," Museveni said.
Museveni also swore in Shartsi Kutesa Musherure as minister of state for finance, planning and economic development in charge of microfinance, and Juma Witonze Kisekka as minister of state for internal affairs.
Musherure's swearing-in was similarly delayed over queries surrounding her dual citizenship. ■
