ABUJA, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- A total of 15 people were killed and 25 others injured after two commercial buses collided in Nigeria's central state of Niger over the weekend, the traffic police said Monday.

Aishatu Sa'adu, sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Niger, told Xinhua by telephone that the two buses caught fire following the collision along the Enagi-Mokwa road late Saturday.

Citing a preliminary investigation, Sa'adu attributed the accident to "wrongful overtaking at a bend," saying the two buses were traveling at high speed.

Fatal road accidents are common in Nigeria and are often attributed to speeding, overloading, poor road conditions, and reckless driving.
