LUSAKA, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Zambia has partially lifted its suspension on imports of certain livestock and livestock products from South Africa as the country's foot-and-mouth disease situation improves.
Charles Maseka, director of veterinary services at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, said in a statement released late Wednesday that imports of selected cloven-hoofed animals and animal products will now be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to strict import conditions, veterinary risk assessments, and official approval.
Products eligible for import include certain cloven-hoofed animals, processed dairy products, and heat-treated meat products, he said.
He advised importers, livestock producers, traders, and other stakeholders to seek guidance from the department before placing any orders to ensure compliance with Zambia's import requirements.
Zambia suspended livestock import permits from South Africa in February following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. ■
