TRIPOLI, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Violent clashes erupted on Tuesday between rival armed groups in the Libyan cities of Sorman and Zawiya, about 60 to 75 km west of the Libyan capital Tripoli, leaving at least five people dead, including two members of the 103rd Infantry Battalion, according to local media.
Local media said the fighting broke out between elements of the Anti-Security Threats Apparatus and fighters from the 103rd Infantry Battalion.
Field sources said that the clashes involved heavy and medium weapons, as well as drones, along the coastal road and near Sorman prison, with thick smoke rising from multiple locations.
The Sorman municipality suspended work in all departments and facilities, and declared an exceptional holiday to protect employees and citizens, while keeping service agencies and emergency teams operational.
According to local media, forces affiliated with the Anti-Security Threats Apparatus deployed armed reinforcements to the area. Armed convoys were seen moving through the city of Sabratha after participating in the clashes in Sorman.
Zawiya and Sorman have witnessed sporadic clashes between rival armed groups. The latest clashes come as Libya remains mired in political and security fragmentation, with rival factions disputing governance and stalled efforts toward a comprehensive political settlement. ■
