ALGIERS, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- A preliminary investigation into a bus accident that killed 27 people in Algeria points to drug-impaired driving, overloading, and speeding as the cause, judicial authorities said on Sunday.
According to initial findings, the deceased 33-year-old driver had consumed narcotic substances before the crash. Biological analyses confirmed the presence of drugs, while two psychotropic tablets were found in his possession, said a statement by the authorities.
The investigation also found that the bus was overloaded, carrying 64 people despite having a legal capacity of 51 passengers, including the driver, and was traveling at 121.63 km/h while descending a slope in an area where the speed limit was 60 km/h.
The prosecutor said the investigation remains ongoing to determine all responsibilities and initiate legal proceedings against those found responsible.
The passenger bus overturned on Friday in Boumerdes province, east of Algiers, leaving 27 people dead and 42 others injured. ■
