JOHANNESBURG, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Eleven people, including five children, were killed, and several others injured after a bus overturned on the N1 highway in South Africa's central Free State Province on Thursday, local authorities said.
The Free State Department of Health said the accident occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time (1930 GMT) on the highway, about 24 km north of Trompsburg in the direction of Edenburg. The bus was carrying about 60 passengers.
Department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said emergency medical services found dozens of injured people outside the bus, while rescue teams worked to extricate children trapped underneath the vehicle.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. ■
