ABUJA, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of people are feared trapped after a three-story building collapsed in Nigeria's southern state of Anambra late Sunday, local authorities said on Monday.
Several injured people have been rescued from the rubble of the building, known as the Elite Five Star Lodge, which mainly accommodates students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko in Anambra, Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesman for the police in Anambra State, told Xinhua by telephone.
Ikenga said rescue operations were continuing on Monday, with emergency responders intensifying efforts to locate those believed to be trapped beneath the debris. He said he feared that many people were still trapped.
Local sources said the building is usually overcrowded with students from the academic institution, which is in the second semester of its 2025/2026 academic session. ■
