CONAKRY, July 17 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and several others injured Friday after a nine-storey building under construction collapsed on the outskirts of the Guinean capital of Conakry, Guineenews reported.

According to preliminary information, the collapse may have been caused by heavy rainfall that has hit the Guinean capital over the past 72 hours.

Mohamed Lamine Sy Savane, Guinea's minister of Urban Planning, Housing and Territorial Development, visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage.

Search and debris-removal operations were still underway.

Building collapses and landslides occur frequently in Guinea during the rainy season.
