KIGALI, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda has confirmed the arrest of two individuals suspected of involvement in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, with one apprehended in Germany and another in Canada, the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA) said in a statement.
In a statement released Thursday, the NPPA said that German authorities arrested Innocent Sebagoyi on July 1, 2026, following an indictment and an international arrest warrant issued against him in 2019.
Sebagoyi, born in 1967, is accused of genocide, extermination as a crime against humanity, and direct and public incitement to commit genocide. According to the NPPA, Sebagoyi allegedly took part in attacks against Tutsi civilians in different areas of Kayove Commune, including killings targeting Tutsi who had sought refuge at Muyange School.
The prosecution authority also announced the arrest of Laurent Nduwayezu by Canadian judicial authorities on June 22, 2026.
Nduwayezu, born in 1958, is suspected of genocide, complicity in genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, extermination as a crime against humanity, and murder as a crime against humanity.
The NPPA alleges that Nduwayezu participated in the killing of Tutsi in several locations across the former Rubavu Commune, including attending meetings where names of targeted Tutsi individuals were identified.
The arrests are part of Rwanda's ongoing efforts to track down genocide fugitives living abroad and ensure accountability for crimes committed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, in which more than one million people were killed. ■
