FREETOWN, July 14 (Xinhua) -- The Office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of Sierra Leone has officially discontinued criminal proceedings against former President Ernest Bai Koroma.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the office said that the proceedings are no longer before any court in Sierra Leone.
Koroma was charged with treason and misprision of treason following investigations into an alleged failed coup attempt. He was granted bail on medical grounds, allowing him to travel overseas for specialized treatment while the case remained pending before the courts, according to the notice.
As a legal consequence of the discontinuance, Koroma's bail has come to an end with immediate effect, the office added.
The office also confirmed that the former president is free to return to Sierra Leone after completing his medical treatment or at any time of his choosing. ■
