CAPE TOWN, July 14 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's Western Cape High Court is set to hear President Cyril Ramaphosa's application to halt Parliament's impeachment inquiry on Wednesday and Thursday.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Parliament said that Makashule Gana, chairperson of the Impeachment Committee on Section 89 Enquiry, would attend the court hearing at the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday and Thursday, in connection with the urgent interdict brought by Ramaphosa.
"Mr. Gana has been cited as the Second Respondent in his capacity as Chairperson of the Impeachment Committee," it added.
Ramaphosa filed the urgent interdict application in June, seeking to prevent the parliamentary Impeachment Committee from proceeding with its inquiry into his conduct regarding the Phala Phala case.
The case arose from the alleged theft of about 580,000 U.S. dollars in cash from Ramaphosa's private game farm in Limpopo Province in 2020, triggering questions over whether the money had been properly declared to authorities.
Ramaphosa argued in court papers that the inquiry should be suspended, while he challenged an independent panel report, which concluded that there was prima facie evidence suggesting he may have committed serious misconduct in connection with the matter.
