LOME, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Togo on Tuesday launched a nationwide campaign to distribute free insecticide-treated mosquito nets to strengthen malaria prevention, as the disease remains one of the country's leading public health challenges.
A total of 5,658,350 insecticide-treated mosquito nets will be distributed to households nationwide. Ahead of the campaign, health workers carried out a door-to-door census between late May and early June to identify beneficiaries and issue collection coupons to them.
In Togo's tropical climate, which provides favorable conditions for mosquito breeding, the regular distribution of mosquito nets remains a key measure to reduce malaria transmission.
Despite progress made in recent years, malaria continues to pose a heavy health and economic burden on the country. In 2024, Togo recorded more than 2.1 million malaria cases and 993 deaths, with children under the age of five accounting for about 70 percent of the deaths. ■
