BISSAU, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Guinea-Bissau's Transitional President Horta Inta-A has called a national referendum for Aug. 30 on whether to bring into force a new constitution approved by the National Transitional Council, according to a presidential decree published Monday.

Under the decree, the referendum will be held by universal, direct, secret and personal suffrage, with voters casting either a "Yes" or "No" vote on whether the constitution should enter into force.

The decision followed a proposal for the referendum that received a favorable opinion from the Supreme Court of Justice, according to the decree.

The National Transitional Council has been acting as the country's legislative body since the military takeover in November 2025.

Guinea-Bissau's transitional authorities announced in January that presidential and legislative elections are scheduled to be held on Dec. 6, as the country seeks to return to constitutional order.
