KAMPALA, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Uganda women's national team defender Aisha Nantongo has expressed delight after joining Chinese Women's Super League side Shaanxi Zhidan Women FC.
"I am very happy that Shaanxi Zhidan Women FC showed interest in me and I have now joined them. I promise to work hard as a player to help the team achieve its set goals," Nantongo told Xinhua in a phone interview.
The central defender completed the move from fellow Chinese Women's Super League club Changchun Dazhong Zhuoyue WFC on Friday. She joined Changchun last year from Egyptian club FC Masar after launching her professional career with Danish side Aalborg BK.
Nantongo said playing in the Chinese Women's Super League has presented a new challenge because of its high level of competition.
"I am happy with the new challenge playing in China because it is also improving me as a player," she added.
Edgar Watson, executive director of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), said Nantongo's move would not only benefit her career but also inspire more Ugandan players to pursue professional opportunities abroad.
"I am happy for Nantongo and these moves help Football grow and also motivate more players to work hard to be able to join the paid ranks," Watson said.
Before moving overseas, Nantongo played for Ugandan clubs Kawempe Muslim, St. Noa Girls and London College. She later joined Aalborg BK in Denmark before transferring to FC Masar in Egypt. ■
