ACCRA, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from devastating floods that hit Ghana's capital on Monday has risen to 12, an official said Tuesday.

Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) spokesperson Alex King Nartey said seven more deaths were confirmed between Monday and Tuesday morning, bringing the total to 12.

"We are still receiving information on the extent of devastation and casualties from the flood, but can only confirm 12 life losses as of this morning," Nartey said.

He told Xinhua that the GNFS successfully put out a fire at the Plastics Market near Kwame Nkrumah Circle, where four of the deaths were recorded.

Ghana experienced continuous rainfall from late Sunday through Monday, totaling about 140 millimeters, triggering floods that damaged homes, businesses, transportation and other services.

President John Dramani Mahama has asked the government to release contingency funds to support relief efforts for flood-affected communities, families and individuals.
