ADDIS ABABA, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) Commission on Thursday welcomed the peace agreement signed between the United States and Iran.

In a statement, Chairperson of the AU Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described the signing of the peace accord as "an important step" towards ending hostilities, reducing tensions, and advancing lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.

"This agreement demonstrates the power of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts and building trust between nations," Youssouf said. "It offers renewed hope for peace, stability, and cooperation in a region whose security and prosperity have global significance."

He commended the leadership and constructive engagement of all parties involved, recognizing the important mediation and facilitation efforts of Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar in helping to advance dialogue and build confidence between the parties.

Youssouf further expressed his hope that the agreement would pave the way for lasting peace, regional stability, and enhanced international cooperation, which is consistent with the AU's commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.

He reiterated that the 55-member continental organization stands ready to support all initiatives that advance peace, cooperation, and mutual respect among nations.

The United States and Iran have reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end hostilities, lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and halt military operations across multiple fronts.

The deal announced early Monday, long anticipated as the three-month conflict continued to batter global supply chains and rattle financial markets, offered a glimmer of hope for an end to the fighting and a return to stability across the region.
