TRIPOLI, June 15 (Xinhua) -- The second General Conference of the Asian-African Parliamentary Council opened on Monday in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, bringing together parliamentary leaders and delegations from Asia and Africa to discuss ways of enhancing intercontinental cooperation.
Speaking at the opening session, Aguila Saleh, speaker of the Libyan eastern-based House of Representatives, called for stronger parliamentary coordination to address shared challenges, including regional conflicts, economic pressures, climate change, food security and migration, according to remarks broadcast live on the parliament's official Facebook page.
Saleh said Libya, which currently chairs the council, is committed to working with member parliaments to strengthen the body's role in promoting sustainable development, collective security and regional cooperation.
The two-day conference will focus on regional and international issues of common concern, as well as the role of parliaments in fostering dialogue, partnership and development across Asia and Africa.
The Asian-African Parliamentary Council was established following its inaugural conference in Beirut in September 2025 to enhance parliamentary cooperation and consultation between the two continents. ■
