DAR ES SALAAM, June 11 (Xinhua) -- The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has unveiled a month-long program of activities to commemorate its 50th anniversary, highlighting both its historic legacy and a forward-looking transformation agenda.
In a statement issued by TAZARA headquarters in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, the authority said the Golden Jubilee celebrations, themed "TAZARA@50: From Liberation to Transformation," will reflect on five decades of service while setting the stage for future revitalization.
Constructed in the 1970s with Chinese assistance, TAZARA was founded on a shared vision by the leaders of Tanzania, Zambia, and China as a strategic project to advance liberation, regional solidarity, and economic independence, said the statement.
Since its completion, the statement said, the railway has played a key role in facilitating trade, connecting communities, and linking the port of Dar es Salaam to the hinterland of southern Africa.
According to the statement, the commemorative program will feature public engagement activities, media campaigns, stakeholder events, youth participation initiatives, and historical reflections aimed at showcasing the railway's contribution to Africa's development.
TAZARA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Bruno Ching'andu called on stakeholders, including staff, customers, partners, and communities along the railway corridor, to take part in the celebrations.
The official launch of the jubilee activities is scheduled for July 14. Preceding events will include an open week for public interaction, a corporate golf tournament in Lusaka and Dar es Salaam, academic lectures exploring the railway's historical significance, media tours, and community outreach programs. ■
