ABIDJAN, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were killed and more than 50 others injured in a road accident that occurred Thursday near the town of Niakaramandougou in northern Cote d'Ivoire.
According to preliminary information provided by a security source, a passenger bus traveling from northern Cote d'Ivoire to the captial Abidjan collided with a truck transporting heavy equipment, causing the bus to veer off the road and overturn several times before falling into a ravine.
Driver negligence, poor vehicle conditions and overloading are among the leading causes of road accidents in Cote d'Ivoire.
Ivorian Office of Road Safety records around 6,000 road accidents each year, causing nearly 600 deaths and more than 13,000 injuries in the West African country. ■
