YAOUNDE, June 9 (Xinhua) -- More than 50 measles-related deaths have been recorded in the Central African Republic since April, local authorities and media said on Tuesday.
The cases were reported in the northeastern part of the country, particularly in the village of Ndjiffa, located in the Vakaga prefecture.
Mahamat Abdallah Kassanda, mayor of the Ouanda commune, said most of the victims were children.
"From April 26 until today, I have recorded 56 deaths in the village of Ndjiffa alone, not counting those that occurred in other villages in the district," he said.
The government has yet to react officially.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that is transmitted via droplets from the nose, mouth, or throat of infected persons. ■
