CONAKRY, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Polling stations opened Sunday morning across Guinea for legislative and local elections.

Voting began between 0730 GMT and 0800 GMT in most polling stations in the capital Conakry, where voters arrived with their voter cards and cast ballots in an orderly manner.

At a polling station in Matoto in Conakry, officials said voting started at 0745 GMT without any major incidents reported.

Election officials at polling stations in Dixinn and Kaloum also confirmed the presence of candidate representatives overseeing the voting process to help ensure transparency.

Voters interviewed by Xinhua expressed satisfaction at taking part in the elections and called on voters to cast their ballots.

More than 6.7 million voters are registered for the polls in the West African country.

Guineans are expected to elect 147 members of the National Assembly as well as municipal councilors in the country's 342 communes.

Voting is taking place nationwide under the supervision of electoral authorities and observers.
