DAR ES SALAAM, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's diaspora contributed 3.313 trillion Tanzanian shillings (about 1.27 billion U.S. dollars) in remittances during the 2024-2025 fiscal year, underscoring their expanding role in national development, Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Mahmoud Thabit Kombo has said.
Presenting his ministry's budget estimates for the 2026/2027 fiscal year in parliament in Dodoma on Tuesday, the minister said the figure marked a 57 percent increase, up from 2.11 trillion shillings (about 810 million dollars) remitted in 2023-2024.
The rise in remittances reflects growing confidence among Tanzanians abroad in the country's policies and enabling environment, with remittances supporting household welfare, boosting investment and contributing to financial sector growth, Kombo said.
He noted that the 2001 Tanzania Foreign Policy, revised in 2024, emphasizes full participation and inclusion of the diaspora in national development.
During the period under review, the ministry coordinated diaspora service clinics in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Botswana to showcase investment opportunities and provide services such as immigration, national identification and financial advisory services, he said.
The minister added that improvements to the Diaspora Digital Hub registration system aim to enhance data quality for policymaking. As of May 14, 2026, more than 3,000 diaspora members had registered, with further increases expected following system upgrades. ■
