KAMPALA, May 25 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed and four others seriously injured after the vehicle they were traveling in collided with an elephant in a national park in northern Uganda, police said Monday.

The fatal crash occurred at around 8:00 p.m. local time (1700 GMT) on Sunday when a car carrying officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) struck an elephant crossing the road inside Murchison Falls National Park along the Arua-Kampala Highway, according to a statement issued by Michael Kananura, spokesperson for Uganda's traffic police.

According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the car, which was carrying seven URA officials traveling from Arua City back to Kampala after official duty, hit a crossing elephant and subsequently lost control of the vehicle, Kananura said.

"Three occupants died on the spot, while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries," he added.

Kananura said police responded promptly and transported the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital for treatment before they were later transferred to Kampala for further medical care.
