YAOUNDE, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) on Wednesday condemned the killing of 23 Chadian soldiers by the terror group Boko Haram in the country's Lake Chad region.
In a statement, the UN condemned the act of violence in the strongest terms and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting Chad's counter-terrorism efforts.
The 23 soldiers were killed and 26 others injured on Monday night after Boko Haram militants launched an assault on the Barka Tolorom island base.
Chadian army spokesman Issakha Acheikh Chanane said a "significant number" of militants were killed and their weapons seized during the counter-operation.
The terror group Boko Haram has been active in the Lake Chad basin for more than a decade, inflicting heavy human and material losses across the region. ■
