GITEGA, Burundi, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Burundi's ruling party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), on Sunday nominated President Evariste Ndayishimiye as its candidate for the presidential election scheduled for 2027.
The nomination was made at an extraordinary congress of the ruling party held in Gitega, the country's political capital in central Burundi.
Ndayishimiye pledged to advance the CNDD-FDD's vision, promising to strengthen the rule of law and promote sustainable development.
Born in 1965, Ndayishimiye was sworn in as president of Burundi in 2020 for a seven-year term.
Under the 2018 constitution, the president may serve up to two consecutive terms. ■
