ACCRA, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Berekum Chelsea midfielder Dominic Frimpong was killed in an armed attack on the team bus as the Ghana Premier League club traveled home from a league match, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said Monday.

The GFA said Berekum Chelsea was returning from Samereboi in Ghana's Western Region to its home base in the Bono Region after Sunday's match when armed men attacked the bus.

"The Ghana Football Association has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea FC. The GFA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, his teammates, technical staff, management, and all Berekum Chelsea during this extremely difficult time," the federation said in a statement.

"This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league," it added.

The GFA said it would work with stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions.
