CAPE TOWN, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The South African Communist Party (SACP) on Thursday condemned Israel's continued attacks on Lebanon as an "attempt to undermine the ceasefire" between Iran and the United States.

In a statement, the SACP said that on April 8, following an agreement on the ceasefire between Iran and the United States, Israel carried out one of the most aggressive bombardments of Lebanon in recent times, killing more than 250 people in a single strike and injuring 1,165 people.

"This act of violence can only be interpreted as Israel's attempt to undermine the ceasefire and all peace prospects," it said.

The SACP condemned Israel's actions as "not only detrimental to peace efforts at the present time but also a new avenue for military action in furtherance of its new genocidal agenda."

The party also condemned the U.S.-Israel collaboration in the region, saying it seeks to "undermine the sovereignty of states in the Middle East in service of contemporary expressions of Western imperialism."
