Cameroonian Senate elects Abdoulaye as new president

YAOUNDE, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Aboubakary Abdoulaye, a member of the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) party, was elected president of the country's Senate, the upper house of parliament, on Tuesday evening.

Abdoulaye won 100 percent of the vote, according to official results published by the Senate.

The 64-year-old succeeded Marcel Niat Njifenji, who had served as Senate president since 2013.

Abdoulaye, who is also a traditional leader, was the Senate's vice president before his election.

The Central African nation held its first Senate elections in 2013.
